In the hopes of providing comprehensive daily Catholic news updates, the Vatican has debuted a news service on YouTube.com.
January 23rd, 2009 marks the launch of Pope Benedict XVI and the Vatican’s launch of a new channel on YouTube aimed at keeping Catholics and non-Catholics alike informed on a daily basis as to the daily goings on with the Pope and in Vatican City. Where Can You Find the Pope’s New Channel?You can visit the new Pope Channel on YouTube by going to youtube.com/vatican, the new URL address for the channel. You can also go to YouTube.com and Search for Vatican to find the official channel. The Purpose of the New Partnership with YouTubeAccording to Father Federico Lombardi, spokeman for the Holy See, in an interview with the Catholic News Agency, the Pope and the Vatican decided to launch this partnership in order to keep the Vatican a part of the many new technologies which are arising and creating new opportunities for communication among a much wider global community without regard to cultures, race or nationalities. Father Lombardi further stated that the Vatican has recognized the value of the new social technologies in making the inner workings of the Vatican, the Holy See, and the Pope more easily accessible to all. The Vatican intends to add one to two new pieces daily under two minutes keeping the world posted as to the goings on in the church and around the world. We can assume also the Catholic response will be given in these updates. YouTube’s Assistance and Response to the New Pope ChannelSaying that "We are honored that the Vatican has chosen to use the site to communicate with people across the world, and delighted that our community will have access to the words of the Pope on some of the most important issues facing the world today," Henrique de Castro, Managing Director of European Sales and Media Solutions for YouTube helped the Vatican in bringing about their new technology in creating the new Channel for YouTube. Contents of the Pope Channel on YouTubeAmong the over 18 videos available on launch date are several excerpts from the Holy Masses held during the Christmas Holy Days this advent, along with news regarding Iraqi Christians around the world and the Pope calling for their full citizenship under the law, Pope Benedict XVI receiving the President of Macedonia, videos regarding the Eastern Church and Pope Benedict XVI’s efforts to create more unity between the Eastern and the Western Traditions, a message from Father Lombardi introducing the new channel, and many messages calling for peace around the world given by Pope Benedict XVI. The Catholic Church claims its roots all the way back to Jesus Christ and the Writings of the Early Church Fathers. Pope John Paul II, Benedict XVI’s predecessor, was known for saying that he considered himself always to be first and foremost a priest, not unlike the humble St. John Vianney – Patron Saint of Priests.
